Some of the topics that came up in the discussion with Helen Clark (Part 3 of 3):

  • Invoking of ANZUS unnecessary - it is concerning this was raised earlier in year

  • Debate on AUKUS in Australia is really heating up, questions being asked -

It’s like buying a pig in a poke.

    • That is, you don’t know what you have bought exactly until it is revealed at a later time.

  • Does New Zealand really need these Pillar 2 capabilities and what are they?

    • Questions to debate:

      • Do we need them [capabilities in AI, cyber, quantum, drones, more]?

      • Can we afford them?

      • What are the implications of New Zealand signing up to this with its industries?

      • Do we want to be known for developing industries that are part of a military industrial complex?

  • The AUKUS Military-Industrial Complex comes to town:

    • Some NZ tech companies like Rocket Lab see a business opportunity & have come out to form a group touting its benefits. RNZ reports earlier in the year:

Collins also suggested New Zealand's space industry might help develop hypersonic tech, a goal shared by Pillar 2 and Washington, and already involving local firm Rocket Lab in Pentagon contracts.

    In Case You Missed It:

  • In depth thread from Carl Worker after Marco de Jong on OIA request re. briefings between NZ PM Luxon with US Senate Foreign Relations Committee & US House Ways and Means Committee - https://x.com/carlworker/status/1844951951500620049

  • Luxon’s Pivot (behind paywall) https://www.economist.com/asia/2024/10/17/new-zealands-biggest-pivot-since-the-1980s

  • From Terence O’Brien (2021): America’s strategic response to China influences others. The Washington security community views China as an "existential threat"—this is unlikely to change. NZ must adjust not only to a rising China but also to a reactionary US. #USChina - https://x.com/MatyOBrien/status/1846040837748351380
